It was found that the police wrote an application for refusal to punish the taxi driver who was assaulted by the Vice Minister of Justice Lee Yong-gu. Earlier, the police were controversial over the investigation of the assault case of the taxi driver by Lee.
According to the police on the 26th, taxi driver A, who was assaulted by Vice Minister Lee on the 6th of last month, visited the Seocho Police Station in Seoul on the 9th of the same month. According to the police, Mr. A, who was asked to investigate the victim, asked, “I agreed, but should I go to the police station?” and the police replied, “I have to come to write a statement.”
According to the police, Mr. A’s application for disapproval at the time was written for him. Regarding the process of filling out the non-penalty application, a police official said, “Mr. A wrote his name and address himself. If you give it to me, I will read it and sign it, so the detective in charge wrote it.”
The police explained that the detective in charge at the time wrote on the A4 paper that he did not want Lee’s punishment, and that Mr. A confirmed this and signed it himself. The police applied a simple assault crime, which is an anti-intentional crime, based on the application for non-punishment prepared through this process, and terminated the internal affairs without a criminal charge.
The police said there was no problem because the detective in charge wrote the application for disapproval, but the taxi driver said that he did not want to be punished, and the taxi driver himself signed it.
Meanwhile, the police closed the case of Vice Minister Lee’s assault and notified the result to Vice Minister Lee. However, according to the police’s internal handling rules, there was no provision to notify the victims of the treatment results.
Earlier, Vice Minister Lee took a taxi at the entrance of an apartment complex in Seocho-gu, Seoul. After that, Mr. A got out of the car and reported it to the police.
The police officer of Seocho 3 Police Station, who was initially dispatched to the scene, commented that “the special price law should apply driver assault” to the effect that the Vice Minister Lee assaulted the driver while driving a taxi, but the Seocho Police Department later charged with “simple assault” under the criminal law.
