“At one time, people said,’Yoon Yeo-jung is a divorced woman. You shouldn’t be on TV.’ But now they like me very much. It’s strange, but that’s human.”

Yoon Yeo-jeong, the first Korean actor to be nominated for an American Academy (Oscar) Best Supporting Actor Award, told the New York Times (NYT) on the 3rd (local time). Yoon Yeo-jeong played a hot role in the movie’Minari’ in the role of a strange and loving grandmother (Soon-ja).

He said, “I was suffering because I only came in small roles, and most of the people hated me.” “I was thinking of quitting and returning to the US, but I survived like this and I am enjoying acting,” he said calmly in an interview with NYT.

Yoon Yeo-jung, who interviewed a NYT reporter on video at his home in Seoul, said, “I couldn’t even imagine that a seventy-three Asian woman would be nominated for an Oscar.” During his prime in the 1970s, he married and moved to Florida, USA, lived for 10 years, divorced, and then came back to work as an actor in Korea, recounting his difficult and lonely days.

Yoon Yeo-jung said in an interview, “I have a lot of stress. People now think of me like a soccer player or the Olympic national team, but it is burdensome,” he said in an interview, revealing his thoughts on the spotlight that focuses on him. In particular, in the aftermath of the award of the movie’Parasite’ (director Bong Joon-ho), the Korean media continued to release reports predicting the possibility of winning Yoon Yeo-jung, and he added, “I tell Bong’It’s all because of you’”.

In an email interview with NYT, director Isaac Jung (Korean name Jeong Isak), who said that he had deeply impressed Yoon Yeo-jeong’s debut film, Director Kim Ki-young’s’Hwa-nyeo’ (1971), matched her life and attitude with the role of Minari’s grandmother written by him. He said he thought he was touching. He said that Yoon Yeo-jeong is an actor who is famous for his generosity and sincere attitude in Korea, and that he thought that such points could captivate the audience through his role in Minari.

Yoon Yeo-jeong said that he was impressed by the fact that director Jung, who was born and raised in the United States, has even the earliest appearances of his own, and he wanted to know about him. At the same time, he praised him, saying, “Director Jung is a very quiet person,” and he liked it enough to think that it would be good if it were his son. They said they first met at the Busan Film Festival with the introduction of Producer Lee In-ah, Yoon Yeo-jung’s close friend.

Yoon Yeo-jung also introduced an anecdote about Alan Kim, who appeared as grandson David at the time of filming Buttercup. Alan Kim had little experience in acting, so he thought he might test his patience in the filming with him, but he said that when he saw Alan memorize all the lines, he said that he confessed his worries.

It is said that Alan looked at his early years as a young man while dealing with his acting attitude. Yoon Yeo-jung explained, “I didn’t learn acting at school, nor did I study movies,” he said. “I had a feeling of inferiority. So, when I received the line, I practiced very hard.”

NYT commented on Yoon Yeo-jung’s appearance in the interview, “a kind smile and cheerful laughter burst out on her thoughtful expression, and there was a natural dignity in her serene appearance,” and said, “I was resolute when I said my thoughts.”

Meanwhile,’Minari’ was nominated for the Academy’s Best Prestigious Artwork Awards, as well as Director, Best Supporting Actress, Best Actor, Screenplay, and Music Awards. The 93rd Oscars will be held on the 25th. Prior to this, an awards ceremony for the American Actors Association (SAG) called’Oscar Barometer’ will also be held on the 4th. ‘Minari’ was nominated for three categories, including the SAG Award for Best Supporting Actress (Yeo-jung Yoon), the Ensemble Award (All cast members), and the Best Actor Award (Steven Yeon).
