Astra Vaccine Elderly vaccination disruption… Judgment’reservation’
[앵커]
At the second expert meeting for domestic approval of the AstraZeneca Corona 19 vaccine, the government determined that’the item can be approved’.
However, unlike the results of the first meeting, the judgment was delayed regarding vaccinations to the elderly over the age of 65.
At the end of this month, there are concerns that vaccinations for the elderly in nursing homes may be disrupted.

As a result of discussing the safety and effectiveness of the AstraZeneca vaccine by the Central Pharmacist Review Committee, the 2nd expert meeting of the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, it advised that “the product can be approved” as a condition of submitting the results of the clinical trial currently in progress.
This is a result of reflecting the results of the consultation of the first verification advisory group that was urgently needed to prevent Corona 19 in Korea.
However, we have reserved our judgment regarding vaccinations for the elderly over the age of 65.
In the same way as in Europe, the subject to be vaccinated should be 18 years of age or older, but in the precautions for use, it is believed that “whether or not to be vaccinated over the age of 65 should be carefully determined as there are insufficient data on the effectiveness.”
Eventually, the final judgment was handed over to the 3rd meeting, the Final Inspection Committee and the Vaccination Specialist Committee under the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“In terms of safety, since no major problems were found in our verification, basically, permission is granted, but until the effect is sufficiently verified in terms of safety, it is adjusted a little more so that it can be used more carefully in the medical field. ….”
Currently, the European Commission has allowed AstraZeneca vaccination for all age groups over the age of 18, but some countries, such as Germany and France, do not recommend vaccination to the elderly due to lack of evidence of clinical efficacy.
If there is a final restriction on vaccinations over the age of 65 in Korea, a disruption in the vaccination schedule for the elderly in nursing homes within this month will be inevitable.
