It was the contraction of the face-to-face service industry that drove down industrial production last year.
Financial, insurance, and real estate production increased due to the craze for investment in stocks and real estate, but the total service industry decreased by 2.0% due to sluggish transportation and accommodation and restaurants.
Looking at retail sales, which shows the consumption trend, last year, durable goods such as passenger cars increased by 10.9%, but semi-durable goods such as clothing decreased by 12.2% and non-durable goods such as cosmetics decreased by 0.4%, respectively, and overall decreased by 0.2%.
This is the biggest decline since retail sales fell 3.1% in 2003.
By retail type, non-store retail business increased by 22.9% due to increased online sales, while duty-free shops and department stores decreased by 37.5% and 10.6% respectively.
