Yongin Severance Hospital, “Oral health care can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease”: Wells Daily

[웰스데일리 이금희 기자] Professor Kim Jin-kwon of neurology at Yongin Severance Hospital, Yonsei University School of Medicine, and Professor Song Tae-jin of neurology at Ewha University Seoul Hospital, Ewha Medical Center, revealed that there is a correlation between oral health and lipid levels in blood.

Prof. Jin-Kwon Kim’s team followed up 65,000 people for oral examination for national health checkups for about 5 years, and found that patients with periodontitis had a lower level of HDL cholesterol (High Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol), which has a protective effect against cardiovascular disease. appear.

In addition, it was confirmed that triglyceride levels increased when there was a tooth defect. Conversely, when brushing frequently, HDL cholesterol levels were high and triglyceride levels were low.

HDL cholesterol is also called good cholesterol because it removes bad cholesterol accumulated on the walls of blood vessels. When HDL cholesterol is high, it helps smooth blood circulation and lowers the risk of angina and myocardial infarction. In contrast, when triglycerides accumulate in the body, they can cause dyslipidemia such as hypertriglyceridemia.

On the other hand, oral diseases, including periodontitis, are known to cause localized oral inflammation as well as systemic inflammatory reactions, affecting the occurrence of various diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. In fact, in previous studies, it was confirmed that the higher the incidence of diabetes and the higher the fasting blood sugar, the more periodontitis or poor brushing.

Yongin Severance Hospital Neurology Professor Jin-kwon Kim said, “Through this study, we have confirmed that there is a correlation between oral health and lipid levels in the blood.” It is of great significance that we have proven that it helps.”

This study was published in the December 2020 issue of’Journal of Clinical Periodontology’, an SCI-level international journal.
