As concerns over the spread of the mutant virus from the UK grew, the quarantine authorities decided to investigate whether there were mutations in the cases of Yeongam and Hwasun, Jeollanam-do, where dozens of people were recently infected.
Jeollanam-do announced on the 8th that it has decided to check whether there are mutant viruses in the group infection from the Yeongam temple and sweet potato farm and the group infection from the Hwasun Siping Administrative Welfare Center.
The Yeongam group infection was confirmed by 61 people, mainly at Gwaneumsa Temple, a temple, and a nearby village and sweet potato farm.
In Hwasun group infection, 11 confirmed cases, including 6 public officials, centered on the Administrative Welfare Center in Sipyeong-myeon.
In the case of these two cases, the quarantine authorities are paying attention to the explosion of infected people in a relatively short period of time.
Syrians residing in Naju, confirmed as a mutant virus from the UK, were also confirmed to have an infection between their families just a day or two after the first confirmation, and the spread was very fast compared to other cases.
One out of four Syrian families living in Naju who were confirmed confirmed has a mutant virus, and the other three are currently being tested.
In the case of group infection in Yeongam and Hwasun, the rate of spread is relatively fast compared to other cases, so it was decided to examine whether or not there was a mutation.
Jeollanam-do has already sent specimens to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the case of Yeongam-infected patients, and a specimen of Hwasun-infected patients will be sent soon.
The quarantine authorities will not send samples of all infected individuals, but only one or two samples from outbreaks.
Gang Young-gu, head of the Jeonnam Province Health and Welfare Bureau, said, “There is a lot of concern among residents about the mutant virus, so we will preemptively respond to the possibility of mutation in the case of a group infection that spreads rapidly in the early stages, such as the case of Yeongam and Hwasun.”
