Yangyang Sacheon-ri forest fire extinguished in 6 hours… Forest 6.5㏊’Ashes’

A forest fire in Sacheon-ri, Yangyang-eup, Yangyang-gun, Gangwon-do, where the drying warning was issued, burned 6.5㏊ of the forest and extinguished about 4:15 a.m. on the 19th, six hours later.

The fire, which started at around 10:17 pm the previous day, in a warehouse in Sacheon-ri, moved to nearby hills and spread with the wind of about 5 meters per second.

In particular, the fire proceeded in a similar path to the 2005 forest fire that swallowed Naksansa Temple, a thousand-year old temple, and residents were very nervous. At one time, 84 residents evacuated to village halls and other places to escape a fiercely burning fire. Resident Choi Mo (65) said, “Suddenly, red flames soared along with a gust of wind and spread through a western wind, so I just packed and evaded my body.”

The fire department and forestry authorities fought against fire with Yangyang, police, and military units.

First, 60 units of equipment such as pump cars and 1,028 manpower were put in, and defense lines were established in three places to protect Naksansa Temple and the private houses along the seaside. Yangyang-gun also convened all the staff to prepare for an emergency.

The fire department increased the response to the second stage of response at around 11:22 pm the previous day, and concentrated equipment and manpower to prevent the spread. Fortunately, the wind maintained a speed of 4 to 5 meters per second, and the evolution rate exceeded 50% from around 1 am and caught the flames before sunrise.

As the day dawns, about 300 employees are invested in Yangyang-gun to look for a ember that may be hiding. An official from the forest authority said, “As a dry warning is still issued and even strong winds are forecast, please pay special attention to the weekend in the East Coast region.”
