“Would you like to erase a feminist?” … controversy over’ideological verification’ interview with a large game company

Dong-A Pharmaceutical asked a female interviewer, “Would you like to go to the military?” Amid a controversy over gender discrimination, it was revealed that it was asked “Would you like to erase a feminist artist’s picture from the game” at an interview with a leading domestic game company. The company belatedly sent an apology email to the applicant when the applicant said, “If you do not apologize, we will disclose the company name.”

On the 11th, Mr. A, an aspiring game screenwriter, posted a post on an anonymous Twitter account, claiming that “I was tested in an interview at one of ‘3N’ (Nexon, NC, Netmarble) on the 9th of this month.”

Mr. A asked the interviewer, “Would you like to erase the picture of the illustrator who became an issue as a feminist?” “It was like an experiment while wearing out the humanity of the interviewee,” he criticized.

In the game industry with an overwhelming number of male users, boycotts have been repeatedly taking place when a female voice actor or illustrator who supports women’s rights is used.

In 2016, the voice actor Kim Ja-yeon of the Nexon game'Closers' was replaced by users' backlash for posting a photo wearing a'Megalia' sponsored T-shirt on his personal Twitter. Twitter capture

Recognizing this situation, game companies have repeatedly excluded contracts with workers who openly support women’s rights during interviews or collaborations.

According to the National Women’s Workers’ Union, there are at least 14 women who have suffered unfair treatment in the past five years, such as being excluded from work related to women’s rights issues.

Last year, the National Human Rights Commission of Korea recommended that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism should conduct a relevant survey and improve the practice of ideology verification.

Mr. A said, “I hope there are no questions in the game company interview that verify ideas and insult other positions in the interview,” and “Dong-A Pharmaceutical’s gender discrimination interview is a hot issue, but I didn’t know I was going to receive such a question.”

Mr. A sent an e-mail to Company N, apologizing and asking for a promise not to ask questions about ideology at the interview. He said that if the company responded correctly, it would not disclose the company name.

In another tweet that Mr. A posted around 7:50 p.m. that day, it seems that Company N sent a message saying, “We sincerely apologize for making us feel uncomfortable with the ideological verification question during our practical interview process.” .

According to the contents of this tweet, Company N said, “As you said, in the future, the company will not only thoroughly educate interviewers through pre-training, etc., so that there will be no questions that can be judged as ideological verification of candidates during the interview process. “We will do a full re-examination of the process so that it does not recur.”

In response to this response, Mr. A left a tweet saying, “I have confirmed the contents you sent. I believe I will believe”.
