“The pace of change in the gender gap between news characters and reporters over the past five years has been very slow.” The preliminary report of the’Global Media Monitoring Project’ released on the 4th shows statistics about the strong male-centeredness that still dominates data, dissemination, and paper. The slow improvement of gender bias in the news reflects a male-centered society that seems to be rapidly moving toward a gender-equal society, but never gives up a place easily. The report, which is prepared every five years since 1995, analyzes the ratio of men and women to the news characters and speakers, and the proportion of women-related news. The 2020 preliminary report released this time surveyed about two-thirds of the 120 countries surveyed.

According to the report, in 2020, the proportion of women in TV news and newspaper articles and reporters was 26% and 24%, respectively. Only 21% of the people or reporters appearing as health experts on TV news related to Corona 19 were female. The report said, “When considering the gender ratio of health professionals in reality, the gender bias of the media is revealed.” Research has also been conducted to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) technology to identify and improve media gender bias. Eight media companies, including Germany, France, Japan, and Argentina, formed a collaborative body to improve journalism using artificial intelligence with London School of Economics in the UK in June of last year. Artificial intelligence analyzed 28,051 press photos from 8 media companies on November 9-15 last year. The proportion of report photos featuring women was 22.9%, and photos featuring men were 77.1%. From November 16th to 20th, 1,430 articles of AFP, Nikkei, Deutsche Belle, and Richie were analyzed. Of the people mentioned in the article, 21% were women and 73.3% were men.

In a survey of the gender of the main characters (excluding crowd photos) in the photos published on the comprehensive pages of five daily newspapers, including the 1st to 5th of last month, only 49 (15%) of the 325 photos of women appeared. The far right is a collection of photos of women's appearances, but compared to the men's photos, which are packed with 3 large sheets of paper, even one cannot be filled.
