(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Boram Yoon = As the demand for heating power surged due to the’arctic cold wave’ that hit the country on the 7th, the peak power demand reached an all-time high in winter.

According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the maximum power demand as of 5 pm on this day was 92 million KW, and the winter season exceeded 90 million KW for the first time, breaking a record high.

This morning, the temperature in Seoul dropped to -16.1 degrees and the perceived temperature dropped to -25.3 degrees. In addition, as cold air from the northwest was south, the daytime temperature was 13 to 3 degrees below zero, and the whole country showed a sub-zero temperature distribution.

The instantaneous power demand for each hour has already exceeded 88.2 million KW at 9 am, the rush hour, and has risen to 9,17 million KW at 11:5 am.

After that, it fell during the daytime and then rose again, soaring to 9.61 million KW at 4:40 pm.

The maximum power demand of 9,200,000 KW is not an instantaneous power demand, but an average calculated by an hour.

The government is managing power supply and demand by operating some of the power generators under trial and partially lifting the upper limit on coal power generation.

The government has decided to suspend the operation of 9 to 16 coal generators in order to reduce fine dust this winter and put an upper limit on the amount of power generation in order to reduce fine dust this winter.

An official from the Ministry of Industry said, “On this day, the peak-hour power supply capacity was 98.8 million kW, and the supply reserve was 8.87 million kW (supply reserve ratio 9.7%), maintaining a stable power supply and demand state.”

Normally, when the supply reserve falls below 7 million KW, the government carefully monitors it, and when it falls below 4.5 million KW, an emergency phase is issued.

The Meteorological Administration predicted that the Arctic cold wave will continue for three days until the 9th. In particular, on the 8th, with the peak of the cold, most regions of the country are expected to show a distribution below -10 degrees Celsius.

Accordingly, the maximum power demand is also expected to renew on the 8th. The government has predicted that the maximum power demand this winter will be around 87.6 million kW in the standard outlook and around 94 million kW in the upper limit.

An official from the Ministry of Industry said, “The outlook on the power supply and demand situation on the 8th is currently being analyzed,” and said, “We will make every effort to ensure stable power supply and demand, such as securing more than 10 million KW of reserve power by solving all restrictions on coal power generation.”
