‘Wine Holy Land’ Jayang-dong neighborhood super… Unusual business skills that fascinated even enthusiasts

“I went on a pilgrimage to the wine sanctuary.”

There are two places of doubt that appear in the reviews of wine purchases that appear in the large wine online community, Washap (people who buy cheap wine). It is the’Saemaul Gupanjang’ located in the traditional market in Jayang-dong, Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, and the’Chaoyang Mart’ in Jayang-dong, about 10 minutes away by car. What is the reason why gupanjangs and food marts, which are common in any local market, have been nicknamed’the holy place of wine’? It is easy to find out by looking at the two liquor stands, which you can meet when you pass through the usual entrance where food is displayed. Saemaul Gupanjang has more than 600 types of wine, and Chaoyang Mart has 700 types of wine, and the assortment ranges from low to high, from old to new, and nowadays.

Comes to buy wine at a local mart with a’home drink’ atmosphere

The wine story of’Saemaul Gupanjang’ in Jayang-dong, known as the first generation of local supermarkets, begins with his son Lee Hyun-ki (43), who has been running a mart that his parents have been running for about 30 years. Early last year, when they built a five-segment stand in a corner of the old market that holds about 10 bottles of wine horizontally. It is said that Lee’s younger brother is well versed in wine, and Lee also started because he liked wine. Since then, the wine has been increased little by little, and now the entire row is occupied by wine on one side of the mart.

Corona 19 played a part in the rapid growth in one year. As the time to stay at home increased and I ate at home, I came to buy ingredients and bought wine. As the trend of’home sake’ was combined, the demand for wine in local marts increased. It is said that while buying wine in a traditional market, they often buy market food that goes well with wine, such as Dakgangjeong and Jokbal. As word of mouth came out, it was so prosperous that customers from other regions came to buy wine on weekends. Representative Lee said, “It is the most pleasant to say that it is a local mart, but it is famous in the wine community and the customers are good.”

I am serious about wine by operating other and YouTube accounts.

Another Jayang-dong wine sanctuary’Choyang Mart’ started selling wine on September 23 last year. Just like any other food mart, after passing the entrance where agricultural products are displayed, a sales stand full of wine appears. These are about 700 types of wines prepared by Lee Hang-young (60), who says he can’t drink but likes wine, “I want to sell wine not only soju and beer because it’s a neighborhood mart.” There are also’K Vintners’, which is only available in department stores,’Cideral’, a popular Chilean wine, and’Marquese Antinori’, an Italian wine.

From cheese and snacks to wine glasses, decanters, and wine cellars, it has been decorated to enable’one-stop shopping’ as far as wine is concerned. Marketing activities are also active. If you enter the Instagram account of’Choyang Mart’, which is operated by Lee’s youngest son in his 20s, it is full of information such as new wines that day. On your YouTube account, you can see the wine story as well as food recipes that can be added to the wine through hand-taken videos. At this point, it is as passionate as any other wine shop.

Will the era of small and medium-sized mart wine shops open?

These local super wine shops fascinate customers with different charms, similar to existing wine distributors. They have as diverse as wine shops, but they increase accessibility with friendly neighborhood marts and compete at reasonable prices. Wine recommendation and hospitality are also high-quality. Both are staffed by staff trained in formal wine training institutions. It provides expert guidance on individual wines, such as’Drink this wine after opening it for an hour’. This is possible because the representatives have a love for wine.

Of course, the key is price. If you use the Onnuri gift certificate at a bubble-free price, you get an additional 10% discount. Because it is located in a traditional market, you can receive an income deduction. This is the reason why wine enthusiasts say that there are several bottles at a time.

Since the success stories of the two marts, wine stores with similar concepts have recently been opened in each region. It is seen as a phenomenon that occurred as wine became popular and sharing of wine prices was actively taking place, mainly online. An official in the wine industry said, “It is natural for consumers to welcome high-priced wines that can only be seen in department stores, as it is unique and the price is good. As we jump into the market, changes will come to the wine distribution market.”
