Signs of controversy spreading in professional sports

Professional volleyball has recently risen in popularity and has established itself as a flower of winter sports. However, the dark shadow of’school violence’ is casting on the court.

On the 10th, a long article was posted on a portal site community stating,’They are victims of the current volleyball player’s abuse. The damage was mentioned in 21 items. On this afternoon, Heungkuk Life Insurance apologized after revealing that the’current volleyball player’ mentioned by the victim was the twin sisters Lee Jae-young and Da-young. Both players admitted their past mistakes through handwritten apology.

Men’s volleyball was also controversial on the 13th. According to the author, seniors who were in the third grade when they were in high school were assaulted after being forced to’sing a song’. At last, he was taken to the emergency room in a vital spot, and he claimed that he had undergone testicular suture surgery. He said, “People made fun of him as’Boo X burst guy’. I want to receive a sincere apology.” OK Financial Group, shortly after the controversy broke out, said, “My players Song Myung-geun and Shim Gyeong-seop apologize for school violence.”

In this way, controversy over the past violence is spreading like wildfire on the V-League Court. Furthermore, Jaeyoung Lee-Dayoung and Myungkeun Song are the main players of the team and members of the Korean volleyball team. So, the shock and betrayal that fans feel is even greater.

So far, there have been quite a few controversies about school violence among professional athletes. However, this is the first time that the problem of school abuse of star players representing the league has been known.

In the past, violence between leaders and seniors was taken for granted. The perpetrator said, “(The victim) is a rebuke in the heart of wanting to do better.” Especially in the school sports where we live in a group, this kind of abuse was even more severe.

But times have changed. Awareness improved, and infrastructure such as SNS (social media) was created that could be accused. Violence and bullying are unjustifiable and unacceptable for any reason.

The KBO League has already suffered from measles once. Nexen (now Kiwoom) Heroes punished themselves for suspension of their business in 50 games in the regular season when school violence was exposed against the first nominated rookie Ahn Woo-jin in 2018. The Korea Baseball Softball Association, which leads Amaya, has imposed a “three-year suspension of qualifications” to Ahn Woo-jin. NC apologized in 2021 after the first rookie pitcher Kim Yu-seong, pitcher Kim Yu-sung, was reported to be violent at school, but when public opinion worsened, it made a decision to’withdraw the nomination’.

The’recognition of past school violence crisis’ triggered in professional volleyball is expected to move to other clubs and other professional sports. The KEPCO men’s professional volleyball team conducted a preliminary survey of the school itself and confirmed that there was no problem.

Each club that composes the league is wondering if there is a past history of school violence by their players. There is great concern in that the past will not be erased no matter how careful you are now.
