In the first year of the launch of Samsung Electronics’ flagship smartphone’Galaxy S20′ series in the first half of last year, sales of less than 30 million units were found. It is the first time since’Galaxy S’that sales of the Galaxy S series have not reached 30 million units.

Accordingly, Samsung Electronics plans to lower the price of its strategic smartphone’Galaxy S21′ in the first half of this year and increase sales of the Galaxy S series by launching it about a month earlier than the previous one.

According to Counterpoint Research, a global market research firm, on the 13th, the annual sales volume of the Galaxy S20 series launched in March last year was 28 million units. This is the lowest sales volume of the previous Galaxy S series, excluding the Galaxy S released in 2010.

Samsung Electronics’ annual sales of 40 million units have collapsed since the Galaxy S8. Since the Galaxy S7, which sold at the end of the 40 million units in the first year, the Galaxy S series has continued to record sales of 30 million units. The previous Galaxy S10 sold 36 million units, the Galaxy S9 32 million units and the Galaxy S8 38 million units.

However, in the Galaxy S20, the 30 million presidential line, which had been protected so far, collapsed, and a red light was lit on the Galaxy S series, Samsung Electronics’ flagship smartphone line.

■ Gal S20’s sluggishness is due to Corona 19?… The high price also contributes

In a conference call for earnings in the first quarter of last year, Samsung Electronics explained the reason for the sluggish sales of Galaxy S20, saying, “Smart phone sales decreased from the previous quarter due to the effect of the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19).”

This is why offline sales decreased as outings were restricted due to the aftermath of Corona 19, and demand for smartphone replacement was not large as consumption decreased.

However, it is analyzed that in addition to the effect of the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19), the high price has also affected the Galaxy S20’s sluggishness.

The domestic shipment price of the Galaxy S20 series was 12,48,500 won, the Galaxy S20 Plus was 1353,000 won, and the Galaxy S20 Ultra (256GB) was 1,595,000 won. The factory price of the Galaxy S20 was $999 (about 1.09 million won), the Galaxy S20 Plus was $1,199 (about 1.31 million won), and the Galaxy S20 Ultra (128GB) was $1399 (about 1.35 million won).

Park Chan-ho, a researcher at Hyundai Motor Investment & Securities, said, “The global smartphone market is heading mainly for mid- to low-end smartphones.”

According to Counterpoint Research, in fact, the domestic smartphone market in the second quarter of last year did not reach the level of the same period last year, but sales increased 9% compared to the previous quarter, mainly for mid- to low-end models. In the second quarter, sales of products at a price of less than $400 based on global wholesale prices in the domestic smartphone market were 45%, an increase of 12%p from the same period last year.

The model that sold the most in Korea in the second quarter of last year was the iPhone SE 2020 LTE model, which is Apple’s entry-level smartphone. The domestic launch price of iPhone SE was 550,000 won (64GB), 620,000 won (128GB), and 760,000 won (256GB). Even with the A13 Bionic chipset, which is the same latest chipset as the flagship model, the iPhone 11 Pro, it is analyzed that it has attracted the demand of Apple’s loyal customers by releasing a relatively inexpensive model.

“The domestic smartphone market is slowly reviving, focusing on high-end, mid- and low-priced products with cost-effectiveness,” said Lee Yun-jung, an analyst at Counterpoint Research. “However, the high value-added profits of companies mainly come from the expansion of premium flagship products, so companies are concerned It is a situation that cannot be avoided.”

Samsung Electronics is expected to make efforts to make up for the sluggishness of its previous work by lowering the price of the’Galaxy S21′, a flagship smartphone in the first half of this year.

According to the mobile communication industry, the factory price of the Galaxy S21 series is ▲Galaxy S21 999,000 won ▲Galaxy S21 Plus 1199,000 won ▲Galaxy S21 Ultra (256G) 1.452,000 won/Galaxy S21 Ultra (512G) 1,599,000 won It was confirmed as won. Compared to the previous work, it is about 250,000 won lower than the standard model.

In addition, Samsung Electronics is launching the Galaxy S21 faster than usual in order to respond quickly to the Apple iPhone 12 offensive launched last year and to attack Huawei’s vacuum caused by US sanctions.

According to market research firm Strategy Analytics (SA), in the 5G smartphone market last year, Apple beat Samsung Electronics and ranked second after Huawei. The iPhone 12 series, Apple’s first 5G smartphone released at the end of October last year, was found to outpace the sales of 5G smartphones sold by Samsung Electronics for a year in two months of launch.
