The health insurance coverage rate is calculated based on the data determined by the court in the lawsuit filed against the Health Insurance Corporation in 2015 against the Health Insurance Corporation by the court and the hospital accounting data reported by each hospital to the Ministry of Health and Welfare. did.

As a result of analyzing data for four years from 2016 to 2019, the health insurance coverage rate of 74 university hospitals was an average of 64.7%. It is similar to the national average (as of 2019). The average coverage rate of national university (public) hospitals was 68.2%, 5 percentage points higher than that of private university (private) hospitals.

Among 74 hospitals, Hwasun Chonnam National University Hospital (79.2%) was surveyed with the highest coverage rate. On the contrary, the lowest hospital was CHA Gangnam CHA Hospital (47.5%), which showed that patients directly pay more than half of medical expenses. The level of patient medical expense burden at Gangnam Cha Hospital is 2.5 times higher than that of Hwasun Chonnam National University Hospital.

At the Catholic University of Daegu Chilgok Catholic Hospital and Kyunghee University Hospital, the health insurance coverage rate was not 50%, so patients paid more than half of the medical expenses. Excluding 3 hospitals, the 10 hospitals in the lowest coverage rate were mostly private university hospitals located in the metropolitan area.
