Why did Elon Musk tell Apple about his rejection?

Why did you say that now?

Elon Musk, Tesla’s chief executive officer (CEO), stunned the surroundings by posting a tweet saying, “I was turned down after offering to buy Tesla from Apple.”

It was on the 22nd (local time) that Musk posted an article on the sale of Tesla on Twitter. It’s been a day after a Reuters report that Apple plans to release electric vehicles in 2024.

The content was also quite specific.

“When the Model 3 program was at its darkest, I contacted Tim Cook to discuss the possibility of purchasing Tesla. (One tenth of the current corporate value). He refused the meeting itself.”

Tesla negotiates sale with Google before Apple

It is estimated that Musk made an acquisition proposal to Apple from mid-2017 to mid-last year.

Around that time, Tesla was in great trouble. Elon Musk tweeted a post last November stating that “there was an extreme financial crisis between mid-2017 and mid-2019”.

Of course, that wasn’t the first time Elon Musk considered selling Tesla. In 2013, I had a sale negotiation with Google.

Tesla introduced an electric sports car called the’Roadster’ in 2008, but it lost the market. It was because of the high price of 109,000 dollars. Eventually, until 2013, the 10th year of its establishment, he struggled in a deficit swamp.

Musk, who couldn’t endure, visited his friend Larry Page and offered to buy Tesla.

At that time, the two exchanged specific conditions. The company value went up to $6 billion and the factory site was $8 billion. There were also conditions for guaranteeing management rights for eight years.

Google was also active in the acquisition. But as Model S succeeded, things changed. This is because Tesla’s stock price suddenly jumped more than 300%.

Eventually, there was no negotiation for the sale.

Even taking this situation into account, it is not natural to post a post saying “I offered a sale and was rejected” while Apple is preparing to jump into the electric car market, which is a garden.

Criticizes Apple’s Monocell Battery Strategy “It’s Strange If It’s True”

However, in another tweet that Musk immediately posted, you can find something meaningful.

“If it’s true (Apple uses a monocell battery), it’s weird,” he said. I also wrote down the reason for thinking so.

“Monocells are electrochemically impossible. This is because the maximum voltage is too low, ~100X. Perhaps it means the cells connected to each other?”

Musk’s article slightly sarcastic the report that Apple plans to use’monocell’ single battery manufacturing technology for electric vehicles. Foreign media said that if the monocell battery technology is used, vehicle cost reduction effects can be expected.

Let’s go back to the first question. Why did Musk tell Tim Cook about his rejection?

Tesla is now listed on the S&P500, the birthplace of superiorism. On the day of its debut, Apple’s electric car news broke out and the stock price dropped slightly, but it is clear that it is a good company. The market capitalization is also over $600 billion.

But why did Musk say something he didn’t have to do?

Some estimates seem possible.

Musk talked about being rejected by Apple, confessing that it was “a tenth of its value now.” It is accepted as a phrase that slightly reveals Tesla’s current position, which has grown more than 10 times compared to two or three years ago.

In an article criticizing Apple’s electric vehicle battery method, the pride of “we know it because we did it” also shows.

Taken together, Elon Musk is interpreted as showing a strong “no problem” action on Apple’s entry into the market.

Will Apple’s innovation work in the automotive market?

Among US companies, if a rival, who is quite anxious, jumps in, it can be annoying to launch an advertisement of “Welcome XX”. Of course, it could be over-interpreting with two simple tweets. However, the two tweets posted by Musk on the day the news of Apple’s electric vehicle preparation was delivered are not taken as usual.

This is because Apple has no choice but to be concerned about the existence of Apple, which is sweeping out talented people with strong financial power. Unfortunately, Doug Field, who leads Apple’s electric vehicle project, is also from Tesla.
