Vaccine experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended that a novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) vaccine developed by the multinational pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford in the UK can be used for the elderly over 65 years of age.

According to AFP, WHO’s Expert Strategic Advisory Group (SAGE) said on the 10th (local time) that “considering the totality of available evidence, WHO recommends the use of the vaccine to people over the age of 65.”

In addition, SAGE added that the AstraZeneca vaccine “can be used where the mutation is present,” despite recent research findings that it is less effective against mutant viruses from South Africa.

Earlier, controversy about the effectiveness and safety of the AstraZeneca vaccine was raised due to insufficient data on the elderly over 65 years old. Several countries, such as France, Germany, and Sweden, have also limited the age of AstraZeneca vaccine to under 65.

In the case of the Korea Food and Drug Administration, on the 10th, while permitting the domestic use of the AstraZeneca vaccine, it has decided to state in the precautions for use that’the use for the elderly over 65 should be carefully decided.’

Amidst this, it is noteworthy whether the WHO’s recommendation could alleviate controversy about the efficacy of AstraZeneca vaccine.
