The World Health Organization (WHO) has approved the urgent use of a novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) vaccine jointly developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University.

On the 15th (local time), the WHO announced in a press release that it had put the AstraZeneca vaccine consigned by SK Bioscience of Korea and Serum Institute (SII) of India on the list for urgent use. The WHO comprehensively evaluates the benefits and risks arising from the use of the drug and the risk from emergencies, and then approves the drug suitable for use as soon as possible and puts it on the emergency list.

At regular press briefings, WHO Secretary General Thewardros Adhanom Gobrersusus said, “Both companies are producing the same vaccine, but because they are making it in different factories, they have been reviewed separately. I needed approval.” “(This approval) was completed within just 4 weeks from the time the WHO received the full documentation from the manufacturer. The WHO’s urgent use list evaluates and guarantees the quality, safety and efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccine.” did. In addition, he said, “We need to increase production (of vaccines), and we continue to urge vaccine developers to submit related documents to WHO as well as high-income countries.”

With this approval, the distribution of AstraZeneca vaccine through the’COVAX facility’, an international project for joint purchase and distribution of Corona 19 vaccine led by WHO and others, is expected to proceed soon. WHO approval for emergency use is a prerequisite for distribution of the vaccine through COVAX. AstraZeneca is a major supplier of vaccines to KOVAX, and KOVAX plans to deliver 366 million doses of the vaccine to member countries in the first half of this year.

Earlier, at the end of last year, the WHO approved emergency use of the COVID-19 vaccine jointly developed by Pfizer of the United States and Bioentech of Germany.
