[오피니언뉴스=김지은 기자] The World Health Organization (WHO) has approved emergency use of the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Johnson & Johnson (J&J).

On the 12th (local time), the WHO announced in a statement that “Ad26.COV2.S, a Corona 19 vaccine developed by Janssen, has been put on the list for emergency use.” Janssen is a European subsidiary of J&J.

“The wealth of data from large-scale clinical trials shared by the company shows that this vaccine is also effective for older people,” the WHO said.

“To expedite the process of putting this vaccine on the (emergency use) list, the WHO and evaluation teams in all regions conducted a so-called’short form evaluation’ based on the review of the European Medicines Agency (EMA), which recommended approval the day before I have adopted it,” he said.

“WHO will convene next week’s Immunization Advisory Group, the Expert Strategic Advisory Group (SAGE), to make recommendations on the use of this vaccine,” he said.

In addition, he said, “We reserved 500 million doses of J&J vaccine for the COVAX facility, an international project for co-purchasing and distributing Corona 19 vaccines.”

On the other hand, the J&J vaccine can be effective with a single vaccination and is easy to store, so there is high expectation for widespread distribution.

Previously, WHO put Pfizer and Bioentech vaccines, as well as vaccines developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University, and produced on commission by SK Bioscience in Korea and Serum Institute in India, on the list for urgent use.
