“When is my Sorento contracted?”… Hunger also stopped overtime

Due to the lack of automotive semiconductors, global automakers have started to cut production, including the shutdown of factories, while Hyundai Motor Company and Kia are also expanding their suspension of extra-duty production. Hyundai Motor Company and Kia, which have been dealing with the `multisourcing system` despite the shortage of semiconductor supply so far, also decided that production adjustment was inevitable.

According to the industry on the 5th, Hyundai Motor’s Ulsan plant did not perform extra-duty work at all plants 1-5 on the 1st. Except for some work in the factory, he did not work specially for manufacturing finished vehicles. Even on the 6th, the first weekend of March, extra-duty work is carried out only at some lines of the 2nd and 4th and 5th factories.

Hyundai Motor Company’s Ulsan Plant 1 has decided not to carry out extra work until mass production of the first dedicated electric vehicle’Ioniq 5’begins. Plant 2 conducts extra work for the first week of March, but it is undecided whether the borrower will work overtime due to semiconductor supply and demand problems. Plants 3~5 also decided to set up a production plan for borrowers according to inventory checks through weekly sales and production (panseng) meetings. Overtime work is usually scheduled on a monthly basis, but it seems that it is trying to adjust the production volume according to the shortage of semiconductor supply for vehicles while scheduling on a weekly basis. An industry official said, “When looking at the global semiconductor supply and demand situation, there is a high concern that the crisis in the domestic automobile industry will spread in March,” he said. “There may be a disruption in normal operation as well as overtime work in the future.”

Kia’s Hwaseong plant in Gyeonggi-do, which produces Kia’s representative car models such as the’K’ series,’Sorento’ and’Mojave’, recently set a policy not to proceed with a special job for the production of finished cars in March. A Kia official said, “Since the second half of last year, the supply and demand of semiconductor devices for vehicles began to occur. We have been operating a stable production line by securing the supply and supply of parts, but in recent years it has become more difficult to secure semiconductor devices.” Explained.

In particular, the Kia Hwaseong Plant is facing difficulties in supply and demand, such as clusters, hybrid power control modules (HPCUs), wireless communication devices (OBEs), and power window motors, among the parts that have been produced mainly for Sorento and Niro models. This is because the semiconductor devices that will be used in these parts have become so rare in recent years. It is also known that the 3rd factory of the Gwangju factory, which produces 1 ton truck bongos, does not conduct extra work in March.

An official at Kia Hwaseong Plant said, “As it is expected that the supply and demand of semiconductor devices in the relevant parts will be difficult, it is unlikely that special work for the production of finished vehicles in March will be inevitable.” “We will do our best to operate the production line stably again,” he said.

Hyundai Motor said, “We are operating a production line centering on vehicle models that have semiconductor stocks for vehicles. We are continuing production by putting general-purpose semiconductors first in vehicles that are almost out of stock.”
