When I tried 5G in 85 cities… SKT was the fastest

As a result of the 5G (5th generation) mobile communication service quality evaluation, SK Telecom continued to be the first in speed. LG U+ showed more improvement in coverage area and download speed than in the first half, and KT had the largest 5G deployment in multi-use facilities such as expressways and rail networks, large stores, and hospitals nationwide.

On the 30th, the Ministry of Science, ICT and ICT announced this in the ‘2020 communication service coverage inspection and quality evaluation’. This is the second evaluation following the evaluation in the first half of this year. In the first half of the year, only Seoul and six metropolitan cities were subject to evaluation, but in the second half of the evaluation, all major administrative districts of 85 cities nationwide were included.

In 85 cities, the’coverage’ area where 5G bursts was the largest at 6064.28㎢ of LG U+. SK Telecom (5242.68 ㎢) and KT (4920.97 ㎢) followed. In major multi-use facilities such as department stores, libraries, airports, and universities, the ratio of the area that can be stably connected to 5G services (the ratio of the area that can be accessed indoors) is 90.99%, higher than in the first half (67.93%). KT (4571) outperformed SK Telecom (3814) and LG U+ (2072) in all facilities that can use 5G.

The average download rate of the three mobile communication companies was 690.47Mbps, which was improved from the first half (656.56Mbps). SK Telecom was the fastest with 795.57Mbps, followed by KT (667.48Mbps) and LG U+ (608.49Mbps). LG U+ is said to have made a lot of investment due to the great improvement in download speed despite its widest coverage. While using 5G service, 5G was cut off and the ratio (conversion rate) to LTE was on average 5.49% when downloading and 5.29% when uploading.

By communication service provider, SK Telecom had the least interruption at 3.95%, followed by LG U+ (4.29%) and KT (8.22%). KT’s conversion rate was 4.55% in the evaluation of Seoul and the six metropolitan cities in the first half of the year, but it soared to 8.22% in this national evaluation, making it inevitable that there was insufficient investment.

Since the conversion rate test is conducted in a coverage area where 5G is bursting, the actual user inconvenience is expected to be greater than the number considering that 5G does not pass outside the coverage.
