“What keeps coming out from inside”
In February, Mr. A, who purchased a tumbler of a famous coffee company online, posted this complaint in a product review. It was a product marked’Overseas Edition’. As it turned out, another consumer who bought the same product before Mr. A also posted a review saying, “The product lid is bad,” and that “only the appearance is plausible.” The product Mr. A bought was a counterfeit.
Seoul caught 56 people who distributed counterfeit luxury goods online
On the 23rd, the Seoul Civil Life Law Police Corps announced that it had found 56 companies who sold counterfeit products such as luxury bags at famous internet shopping malls and large shopping centers around Dongdaemun. From fake tumblers forged logos of famous coffee brands to bags, clothes, and accessories, the number of counterfeit items reached 7,7269. If it was genuine, it was worth about 3.9 billion won.
The Civil Life Justice Police Corps explained, “With the prolonged period of Corona 19, online shopping is revitalized, so that 95% of the counterfeit products caught this time are sold on the Internet, and counterfeit transactions are active.” Of the 56 companies caught, 16 were sold online, and the sales volume of counterfeit products reached 73,565 points (genuine estimates were about KRW 2.3 billion). There were 40 vendors selling in the Dongdaemun area, but the sales volume was 3,704, which was worth 1.5 billion won based on the estimated genuine price. Distributing, selling, or storing counterfeit products is subject to imprisonment for up to 7 years or fines up to 100 million won in accordance with the Trademark Act.
Airlifting’fake luxury goods’ from shopping malls in China
According to the Civil Provincial Police Department, six of the companies caught this time were found to have been supplied with counterfeit products from overseas, including Taobao, a famous Chinese internet shopping mall. Of the six, three were found to have imported goods from Taobao, and three were found to have received counterfeit goods from China and Taiwan. The Seoul Metropolitan Government decided to notify the Customs Service as soon as the source of supply related to overseas imports is specified through further investigation.
The city of Seoul urged that when buying luxury goods online, you should check the quality and price, product label, and parallel import label. One seller said, “This product is an overseas version and is a genuine brand.” “I was cheated. When I received it, there were many cases where the seller did not respond properly or did not acknowledge the suspicion of counterfeit goods by consumers such as “there is no armband logo on the sleeve of the clothes” or “there is no tag inside the clothes.”
The city of Seoul explained that if the quality is poor and inexpensive compared to genuine products, and if the manufacturer, country of manufacture, and quality label are not listed on the product label, they should be suspicious. In addition, he said that caution should be exercised in cases where exchanges or refunds are difficult to claim, advocating’parallel import products’.
Park Jae-yong, head of the Seoul Civil Affairs Law Police Department, said, “We will focus on various information activities and investigations in order to correct the market order and protect the domestic industry.” “We will also carry out active cooperative investigations with related organizations.”
