It is reported that a couple of prestigious universities in Pakistan were expelled from school after making public engagement proposals on a university campus. According to India Today and AFP on the 14th (local time), a video containing a proposal event of a young man and woman couple was uploaded on social media (SNS) such as Twitter on the 11th.
In the video, a long, straight-haired woman kneeled down on the campus of Lahore, one of Pakistan’s most prestigious universities, offering a bouquet to a man, and the man received a bouquet, raised the woman, and hugged the woman. The video was shared online and received a lot of attention, and the authorities at the University of Lahore became aware of this. The school asked them to attend a special disciplinary committee for violating the rules. However, the couple did not show up saying nothing was wrong. As a result, the university imposed a ban on the campus along with expulsion of the couple. In a statement, Lahore University said in a statement that “students did not participate in the disciplinary hearing process,” and “they seriously violate the University’s values and the campus code of conduct.”
The couple refused to apologize and strongly opposed the expulsion. Hadika Zabeid, who made the proposal, said on Twitter that “we do not have to apologize for doing anything wrong.” Her fiance, Sehira Ahmed, also said, “Would someone please explain what’s wrong with our public proposal at Lahore University?” He added that many couples have been making proposals on campus before.
In conservative and patriarchal Pakistan, public display of affection is culturally and religiously unacceptable. Some universities forbid girls from wearing jeans or tank tops or wearing makeup. Many places restrict physical contact between male and female students. Many women are dissatisfied with this, but they follow it as it is in fact unwritten rules. In response to the decision of Lahore University to expel from school, the’progressive college student union’ expressed concern, saying, “The moral surveillance at the university is becoming more common in recent years.”
