Today (19th) is World Sleep Day. World Sleep Day started with the proposal of the World Sleep Society in 2008, and is a global campaign that promotes sleep health for people around the world and promotes the importance of sleep.

On the occasion of World Sleep Day, the results of the global sleep survey conducted by Philips were released and attracting attention. The survey was conducted with 13,000 people from 13 countries around the world (Korea, Australia, Brazil, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Singapore, United Kingdom, and the United States).

When asked about sleep satisfaction, 55% of people around the world answered that they were satisfied with sleep, while only 41% of Koreans answered that they were satisfied with sleep.

It was analyzed that the sleeping time of Koreans is still shorter than that of the world. The average sleep time on weekdays was 6.9 hours and 7.7 hours on weekends, while the average sleep time on weekdays was 6.7 hours and 7.4 hours on weekends.

Also, it was surveyed that Koreans used cell phones more before going to bed. 46% of people around the world said they looked at their cell phones until the last minute before going to bed, while 51% of Koreans said they looked at their cell phones until the last time before going to bed.

Lastly, as a factor that hinders good sleep, Koreans chose worry/stress (28%) the most, followed by mobile devices (21%). On the other hand, people around the world chose worry/stress (24%), mobile devices (14%), and surrounding environment (noise, etc.) (14%).

Chairman of the Korean Sleep Association (Seoul Medical University Neurology) said, “In order to increase the quality and satisfaction of sleep, it is necessary to secure enough sleep time, refrain from using a cell phone before falling asleep, reduce worries and stress before falling asleep. It requires a variety of efforts, such as sleeping and waking up, avoiding naps as much as possible, getting in the sun, ingesting caffeine, smoking, and avoiding alcohol.”
