[아시아경제 임주형 기자] A Singaporean homeowner who died after starving and hitting a Myanmar domestic helper was brought to justice.

According to local media reports in Singapore such as’The Straits Times’ on the 25th (local time), Guyatiri Murugayan admitted all 28 charges including negligence against the housekeeper Piang Ngai Don at the decision trial held on the 23rd.

According to the media reports, Gayatiri is also said to be able to be sentenced to life in prison at the sentence.

Singapore’s prosecution at the trial said, “One man treats another in such a wicked and utterly inhuman way is a reason for the courts to be just angry. This is the worst case of abuse in Singapore. Legal punishment must be made,” he stressed.

Guyatiri and her husband are accused of abusing Piang Ngai Don, a housekeeper who was only 23 years old, in May 2015 with her husband.

At the time, Piang Ngai Don was abused by Gaiya Thiri for more than a year, and eventually died in July 2016.

It is said that Guyatiri left the door open to monitor the money of Piang Ngai and allowed them to toilet and shower. In addition, it was reported that only a small amount of meals were provided while sleeping only 5 hours a day.

Due to such abuse, Piang Ngai Don weighed only 24kg at the time of his death. It was confirmed that he lost about a third of his weight compared to when he first entered Gaiyatiri’s house.

Meanwhile, it is reported that about 250,000 foreign women from poor Southeast Asian countries are working as domestic helpers in Singapore. In addition, there are reports of Singaporeans’ abuse of them.

In this regard, Singapore’s Human Resources Minister Josephine Theo told the Straits Times that it was “horrible” and “it shouldn’t have happened.”

“We need to help the community look for signs of abuse of foreign workers and inform the authorities.”
