[시사포커스 / 이근우 기자] Wayne Rooney, 36, takes over as official coach of Derby County.

On the 15th (local time), the US sports media’ESPN’ said, “Rooney, a former Manchester United skier, retired from active duty to take over as manager of Derby County. Rooney signed a two-year contract and will lead Derby County until the summer of 2023.”

Rooney, who left Manchester United in 2017 and played for 11 months in his home team Everton, played for DC United in the US Major League Soccer (MLS) and returned to England last year. In Derby County, he worked as a playing coach without retiring from active duty.

However, in November of last year, Derby County hardened coach Philip Koku for poor performance, and left Rooney to act as manager. In the next two months, Rooney climbed to the Derby County command tower and naturally retired from active duty.

“When I first arrived in England, I was overwhelmed by the potential of Derby County. The stadiums, training grounds, and staff were great, and there were the qualities and loyalty of the young players, and a fan base that supports them. There were other suggestions, but I knew Derby County was the place for me.”

Rooney, who debuted in the England team’s youngest A-match at the age of 17 and 160, scored a goal at the age of 17 and 317, and is also the youngest A-match record holder. He scored 53 goals in 120 matches in A match, and 253 goals in 559 games in 13 seasons.

Regarding the news of Rooney’s retirement and inauguration as manager, Manchester United: “Rooney, who has spent most of his career at Manchester, was the best striker of all time. He won the English Premier League five times and the European Football Federation (UEFA) Champions League once. He is the player who gave us more than the record. Good luck as a Derby County coach.”
