Coach Lim Geun-bae’s basketball philosophy finally came to fruition.

Yongin Samsung Life defeated Cheongju KB Stars 74–57 in the 5th round of the KB Kookmin Bank Liiv M 2020-2021 women’s professional basketball championship match at the Yongin Indoor Gymnasium on the 15th. With the victory on this day, Samsung Life has enjoyed the joy of the summit in 15 years.

Coach Lim Geun-bae, who has been exclusively in men’s basketball all the time, became the first to take root in women’s basketball when he joined Samsung Life Insurance in Yongin in 2015.

Manager Lim Geun-bae, who has established himself in women’s basketball, insisted on the philosophy that it should focus on domestic players. It’s what everyone wants, but it wasn’t easy in a league where foreign players were the key. Moreover, coach Im Geun-bae’s philosophy was often devalued due to the failure to achieve the result of winning.

For him, this season when the foreign player system was abolished was an opportunity. Director Lim Geun-bae did not miss the opportunity. Having won the championship in the first year when foreign players disappeared, he proved that his philosophy was not wrong. It was a valuable championship, not only sticking to the main players, but also widely used for bench players.

Immediately after the championship, coach Lim Geun-bae said, “It is my opinion that the foreign player system should be abolished. However, I didn’t come up with such an opinion because it seemed that our team would have an advantage. They asked to get rid of them because the domestic players couldn’t take their place. When the level of domestic players rises, I hope to operate the foreign player system again. Instead, I would like to apply the money to be spent on foreign players to expand the base.”

In addition, coach Lim instilled’autonomous basketball’ instead of a coercive culture, allowing the players to realize directly. And he always instilled faith in the players. Even in the championship, when asked about their determination, the players consistently said,’I will do well.’ That belief eventually led to the result of winning.

Immediately after the second game, Bae Hye-yoon said, “In order to prove that the coach’s basketball is right, you have to win. Although he won runner-up, he hasn’t been able to claim that until now, as he hasn’t won it yet. Now you must win and show that your coach’s basketball is right.”

Kim Han-byul also said, “Domestic players will not be familiar with the coach’s basketball. I would have played basketball asking me to do that, but the coach wants to find and play basketball on his own. It will be difficult for domestic players, but this kind of basketball is right for me,” he expressed his support for coach Lim’s basketball.

Of course, winning doesn’t 100% achieve what manager Im Geun-bae wanted. He is still thirsty. Manager Lim said, “It’s been six years since I took office, but the players have changed a lot during that time. In the meantime, she is getting dressed again. It’s still only 60-70%.”

Samsung Life, which has reached the top, plans to further develop for the remaining 30%. What will Samsung Life look like with the rest of it? It is expected that Samsung Life will become more scary than the current one.
