On the 20th (local time), a volcano erupted on the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwestern Iceland, the island country of Northern Europe. According to the Icelandic Meteorological Agency, the volcano that began to erupt on this day is the Fagradalsfjall area, about 30 km southwest of Reykjavik, the capital city. This is the first time since 1240, 800 years ago, that a volcano erupted on the Reykjanes Peninsula.
Four hours after the eruption that day, the volcano was covered with lava to the point of 1 km2, and Keflavik International Airport, near Reykjavik, temporarily suspended aircraft operations, but no human injury has been reported until now as no people live in the surrounding area.
Iceland, which has more than 100 volcanoes, is located between the Eurasian Plate and the North American Plate, and is an area where volcanic eruptions are active. In August 2014, a volcano in the eastern region of Baudarbungka erupted, and a red warning, the highest level, was issued.
