As the COVID-19 outbreak has increased interest in immunity, the number of people taking vitamin or mineral supplements has also increased.

According to experts, depending on the type of vitamin or mineral, there is an appropriate time to take a supplement. When will it be? ‘Web MD’, an American health site, answered.

◆ Water-soluble vitamins = Vitamins B1, B2, B6, B12, etc. Vitamin B group or water-soluble vitamin supplements such as vitamin C do not make a difference whether you eat on an empty stomach or after a meal. Therefore, when you wake up in the morning, it is good to start eating vitamin supplements. Then there will be no days to forget. The same goes for multivitamin supplements.

◆ Fat-soluble vitamins = Fat-soluble vitamin supplements such as vitamins A, D, E, and K should be eaten with food. This is because it is easy to absorb. Studies have shown that fat-soluble vitamins are absorbed up to 50% when eaten immediately after meals than when eaten on an empty stomach.

◆ Calcium supplements = Calcium supplements that women often eat after menopause are good to eat after dinner. This is because, like fat-soluble vitamins, absorption rate drops when fasting. So why is it dinner? Calcium has a nervous stabilizing effect, so it is better to eat dinner with a bite than breakfast or lunch.

◆ Two types of supplements = For example, suppose you need a multivitamin and calcium supplement. Eating both at once makes it difficult for the body to completely absorb it. If you want to take advantage of both supplements, take one at 2pm, one at 8pm, and so on at intervals.

◆ Other drugs = If you are taking statin drugs, thyroid drugs, or antibiotics that lower cholesterol, you need to consult with your doctor about when to take vitamin supplements. This is because you have to leave enough space between the two types of drugs to avoid possible interactions.
