Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin appeared on the podcast’Tim Ferris Show’ on the 10th and said, “Rollup can improve Ethereum scalability 100 times.”
Rollup is one of the Layer 2 solutions to speed up Ethereum’s transaction processing. In general, until now, the blockchain has physical and temporal restrictions because all transaction information is recorded in blocks of a limited size. It is called the scalability problem of the blockchain because it cannot process a large amount of transactions in a short time.
Layer 2 is a solution method that connects a separate off-chain to Layer 1 originally used to solve this problem. Transaction-related operations and verification are performed on the off-chain outside the existing blockchain, and only the results are stored in Layer 1.
Currently, Ethereum’s transaction processing speed (TPS) per second is about 20. Vitalik Buterin said at the Tim Ferris show on the day that “Optimism, an Ethereum layer 2 developer, will release a rollup soon” regarding the solution to the scalability problem.
“Ethereum scalability can be improved 100 times if rollup is introduced without other solutions (sharding),” he explained. “It will be possible to increase Ethereum’s TPS from 1000 to 4000.”
