The U.S. White House officially confirmed that the first summit of China’s security consultative body’Quad’ will be held on the 12th (local time). As the quad, in which the US, Japan, Australia, and India participated, will be put into operation in earnest, pressure on China is expected to intensify.

White House spokesman Jen Saki said at a regular briefing on the 9th, “President Joe Biden will meet with quad counterparts such as Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison on the morning of the 12th. Although meetings were held regularly at the level of the foreign minister, the 12th will be the first meeting at the summit level.”

“The fact that President Biden has organized (Quad) as one of his early holding multilateral meetings shows that we value close cooperation with allies and friends in the Indo-Pacific,” Saki added.

The White House explained that at the first quad summit on the 12th, the threat of new coronavirus infection (Corona 19), economic cooperation, and climate crisis will be discussed. Earlier, at the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held on the 18th of last month, they agreed to realize the’free and open Indo-Pacific’ and support the principle of’freedom of navigation’ with the consideration of China’s entry into the ocean in check. The first diplomatic ministers’ meeting was held in September 2019 during the days of the Donald Trump administration, and the Biden administration took over the quad and held the diplomatic ministers’ meeting followed by the summit.

President Biden has been in China since taking office in January. In a speech at the G7 (7 major countries) summit and the Munich Security Conference on the 19th of last month, the first multilateral diplomatic event, he said, “We must prepare together for a long-term strategic competition with China.” The talks on the 23rd of last month with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the first bilateral summit, also stated that “(to a common concern) it includes coordinating approaches to better compete with China and face threats to our interests and values.” I made a position. One day later, China issued an administrative order to inspect the supply chain of four key items that China could control exports, such as semiconductors, batteries for electric vehicles, rare earths, and pharmaceuticals.

In particular, in the’Intermediate Guidelines for National Security Strategy’ in President Biden’s name, which was released on the 3rd, China was designated as the only competitor of the United States, and Secretary of State Tony Blincoln, head of US diplomacy, discussed the eight foreign policy priorities of the Biden administration. China has been defined as the’largest geopolitical test of the 21st century’. As the US checks against China in all directions, such as economy and military, there is a growing possibility that Korea will be in the midst of a conflict between the US and China after the Quad Summit.
