US House of Representatives “Diplomacy toward North Korea May Wait Until the Next Korean Government”

“Because the US needs cooperation with Korea”

Moon Jung-in “must be restored to the six-party talks summit”

US Congressman Ted Liu said in relation to the Joe Biden administration’s promotion of North Korea policy, “the US can wait for what the next Korean government will look like.”

Rep. Liu, a member of the Asia-Pacific subcommittee of the US House of Representatives Foreign Relations Committee, said this during a video conference at the Quincy Institute, a think tank on North Korea issues in the US.

This can be interpreted as a remark in consideration of the recent disagreement with the ROK-US diplomatic authorities over the North Korean denuclearization solution. On the 5th, Minister of Foreign Affairs Eui-yong Eui-yong said at his personnel hearing, “I think Kim Jong-un is willing to denuclearize.” The US State Department said the next day, “North Korea’s willingness to spread nuclear and ballistic missiles and related advanced technologies poses a serious threat to international peace and security and jeopardizes the global non-proliferation system.” The ROK and the United States have disagreeed with North Korea’s will to denuclearize.

“The war with North Korea with nuclear weapons will have catastrophic consequences,” said Liu. “The Biden administration should use appropriate diplomatic channels to achieve the peace strategy on the Korean Peninsula.” In addition, he suggested, “Because North Korea will not denuclearize within a short period of time, the’nuclear deterrence policy’ should be used as a realistic countermeasure.”

Moon Jeong-in, chairman of the Sejong Institute, who attended the video conference on the same day, said, “The Biden administration can use the joint statement of the 2018 US-North Korea Singapore 1st Summit as a’good starting point’.” Chairman Moon proposed a plan to restore the vice-minister’s “six-party talks”, which had been held from 2003 to 2007 to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue, to a summit meeting or to hold a “Northeast Asia Security Summit”.
