(Los Angeles = Yonhap News) Correspondent Jeong Yoon-seop = A color photo of the US exploration rover’Perseverance’ just before landing on Mars has been released.

On the 19th (local time), the Associated Press reported that Perseverance transmitted color photos of the landing scene on Mars and the surrounding landscape to the NASA.

The first picture released by NASA was taken two meters before the exploration rover safely passed through the ‘7 minutes of horror’ and landed on Mars.

The exploration rover’s entry, descent, and landing (EDL) process on Mars is the most demanding and dangerous during flight, so it is called ‘7 minutes of fear’.

NASA has sent five exploration rovers to Mars, including Perservance, but this is the first time that a descent has been taken.

This photo was taken with a camera attached to a’jetpack’ device that helps the exploration rover land safely.

The photo also shows dust rising from the Mars grounds due to a reverse-propelled rocket engine that slows down the rover’s descent.

“This photo captures me from the air just before my wheel hits the surface of Mars,” said Perservance through a NASA Twitter account. “The moment I’ve long dreamed of is now a reality.”

NASA said at a press conference, “This picture is something we’ve never seen before,” and “It’s really amazing and amazing.”

Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin’s footprints on the moon, Voyager 1’s Saturn, and Hubble Telescope’s Eagle Nebula, called the ‘Pillar of Creation’, as well as the Mars rover’s descent photos also reveal the history of human space exploration. It would be a “symbolic” scene to show.

NASA also released a picture of the exploration rover unfolding its parachute and rapidly descending to the landing site, Jezero Crater. The scene was captured by a high-resolution camera from a Mars orbiter 700 km away.

In addition, the exploration rover also sent photos of the surrounding rocks and land to NASA.

“The open horizon, so much to explore,” Perservance tweeted. “Is (the surrounding rocks) volcanic or sedimentary. We want to quickly find out what the rocks are telling (us).”

Perseverance is tasked with finding traces of life on Mars billions of years ago, including collecting and storing Martian soil and rocks for the next two years.
