“US Biden administration attempts to contact North Korea from mid-February”

It was revealed that the US administration Joe Biden has attempted to contact North Korea through several channels since last month. This is the first time that the Biden administration’s contact with North Korea, which has been taking a cautious stance on North Korea policy, has been revealed.

Reuters reported on the 13th (local time) citing a senior US official that the Biden administration tried to contact the North Korean government through various channels, including New York (United Nations North Korean representative), since mid-last month. However, the official added, “We have not received any responses from Pyongyang so far.” In this regard, the news agency explained that the North Korean delegation to the United Nations did not make any comments.

The Biden administration, which was launched in January of this year, has been cautious about disclosing its North Korea policy, saying, “It is in the process of a comprehensive policy review.” President Biden’s basic perception is that the top-down (top-down) negotiations focused on talks between leaders, adopted by the Donald Trump administration, did not prevent the advancement of nuclear capabilities, but only granted the regime justification to North Korea. The news agency explained, “The Donald Trump administration had an unprecedented relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, but failed to persuade North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons.” For this reason, the new administration has shown its position to take a’bottom-up’ solution that takes steps step by step from the practical level by drawing cooperation with the alliance and neighboring countries.

In the future, according to North Korea’s response, the Biden administration’s policy toward North Korea is expected to change. First of all, it is highly likely that the North Korean nuclear issue will be addressed on the agenda when Secretary of State Tony Blincoln’s visit to Japan is scheduled for 15-18. Sung Kim, Assistant Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and Pacific Affairs of the US State Department, also announced at a press briefing on the 12th that the Biden administration’s review of North Korea policies is expected to be completed within a few weeks.
