President Moon Jae-in presented’Andong Soju’ to US Ambassador Harry Harris, who was scheduled to take office, as a sign of gratitude for the hard work of the past two years and six months.
Blue House spokesman Kang Min-seok said, “President Moon interviewed US Ambassador Harry Harris, who is scheduled to resign for 30 minutes from 3 pm today,” during a briefing at the Chun-Chu Hall on the afternoon of the 19th.
“President Moon evaluated the close cooperation between the ROK and the United States for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the settlement of permanent peace for about two and a half years after Ambassador Harris took office, and asked for continued interest and support for the ROK-US alliance even after taking office I said.
Spokesman Kang also explained the background of President Moon’s gift of “Andong Soju” to Ambassador Harris as a farewell gift.
Two and a half years ago, on July 25, 2018, President Moon enacted his credentials to Ambassador Harris, saying, “I heard that you like Andong Soju, let’s have a drink together”. Ambassador Harris laughed and said, Andong soju is not enough to talk. In fact, during the presidency of Ambassador Harris, there were inter-Korean summits, North Korea summits, and Panmunjeom summits between the two Koreas.
Spokesman Kang said that President Moon was “dynamic” at an interview and said, “We’ve already said goodbye over time.” Ambassador Harris said, “Keeping good memories of Korea and friendship with Koreans. He said that he chose two jobs during his tenure.
The two things Ambassador Harris said in the expression “highlight” were his role in US-North Korea relations, and the other was the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Korean War.
Regarding the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Korean War, Ambassador Harris said, “I was impressed by how Korea treated and honored veterans around the world, including the United States.” “I was happy to see firsthand whether I was responding to the corona, holding elections, and caring for the people. I will never forget.”
Ambassador Harris said, “The ROK-US alliance will continue to grow with common values and interests such as culture and science and technology, as well as military alliances,” said Kang.
President Moon expressed his gratitude to Ambassador Harris, saying, “It was impressive that the ambassador visited Geoje Island to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Heungnam withdrawal operation (last October) and presented a wreath at the monument for the Heungnam withdrawal operation.” I was able to feel the deep affection for me.”
Spokesman Kang said, “President Moon will continue to cooperate closely with the new US administration to strengthen the ROK-US alliance and advance the peace process on the Korean Peninsula. We will also actively cooperate to respond to global issues such as overcoming Corona 19 and responding to the climate crisis.” Added.
President Moon gave Andong Soju as a gift to Ambassador Harris, leaving Korea on the 21st, saying, “I haven’t had a chance to have a drink together.”
Meanwhile, Ambassador Harris served as Commander of the Pacific Ocean of the U.S. Navy and was appointed U.S. Ambassador to Korea in July 2018. He will finish his term of office on the 20th and return to the United States on the 21st, the next day.
