The Joe Biden administration brought additional sanctions against North Korea and diplomatic incentives simultaneously as a way to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula. It is read as a strategy of holding and shaking’stick and carrot’ together.
Specifically, there was no mention of additional sanctions against North Korea and diplomatic incentives.
US Secretary of State Tony Blincoln asked whether North Korea should be recognized as a nuclear powerhouse in an interview with NBC News reported on the 1st (local time). He said that he plans to review the policy overall.
Secretary Blincoln said that additional sanctions against North Korea could be used in cooperation with US allies as a way to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula. He noted that another means could be diplomatic incentives for the unspecified majority.
Such a plan for denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, mentioned by Minister Blincoln, is expected to emerge as a topic of dialogue during calls between the ROK and the US, which are expected to occur soon.
Conflict between the US and Russia is also escalating due to the imprisonment of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalni.
In this interview, Secretary Blincoln criticized Russian authorities for violently suppressing protests calling for the release of Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalni. At the same time, the US said it was considering a’possible response’ to Russia.
“This is a demonstration against the frustrations of the Russian people due to corruption and dictatorship,” he said. “I think it is necessary to look inside, not on the outside.”
Secretary Blincoln also voiced criticism against China.
He said China’s actions against Hong Kong were terrible and that the United States should take steps to give refuge to those fleeing Chinese repression from Hong Kong.
The UK has been implementing measures to expand immigration for Hong Kong residents since the 31st of last month.
Minister Blincoln also cited China’s lack of transparency in relation to the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) as a major issue and urged China to take a professional response.
On the other hand, this is the first time a media interview has been conducted since Secretary Blincoln took office. This interview took place on January 31st.
