Until early next year,’I’m not picking people… Recruitment scale is the lowest in 11 years

The employment cold is expected to continue next year. It is because companies that have reduced their hiring a lot this year in the aftermath of the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) are reluctant to hire jobs in the first quarter of next year. The size of the employment plan until the first quarter of next year is the lowest level in 11 years since 2009, at the time of the global financial crisis.

13,000 people (5.1%) decreased from the same period last year. It increased slightly from the second and third quarters of this year (235,000), which recorded the lowest number of recruits since the first quarter of 2009 (208,000) during the global financial crisis. However, based on the survey for the second half of the year, it is the lowest since the fourth quarter of 2009 to the first quarter of 2010 (236,000 people).

Companies that were hit directly by Corona 19 are already reducing recruitment and hiring. In the third quarter of this year, businesses with five or more commercial employees had 621,000 employees. Of these, the number of employees employed was 557,000. Compared to the same period of the previous year, the number decreased by 51,000 (-7.6%) and 41,000 (-6.9%) respectively. As of the third quarter, job openings are the lowest since 2012 and employment since 2013.

“The third quarter of this year was affected by the re-proliferation of Corona 19 as a time to strengthen social distancing,” said Kwon Ki-seop, head of the employment policy department of the Ministry of Employment. Concerns have been realized that laws designed to improve the treatment of lecturers at university can make it more difficult for teachers to find employment.

Meanwhile, the average monthly wage per worker was 3,344,000 won as of October this year. It is contained in the’November Business Labor Force Survey’ released by the Ministry of Employment on the same day. It increased by 0.3% compared to the previous year. The wage increase rate jumped from 0.1% in August this year to 1.9% in September and then declined again in October. The Ministry of Employment explained, “The rate of wage increase has decreased due to the slowing of the increase in flat-rate wages caused by Corona 19 and the like and the reduction of special benefits.”

In particular, the wages of businesses with 300 or more employees decreased by 6% from a year ago to 4691,000 won. Due to the decrease in working hours in the aviation and transportation industry, the rate of increase in wages was slowing. The Ministry of Employment explained that the automobile and shipbuilding companies that received a lot of bonuses last year decided not to receive this this year, but there are other effects as well.

As of October, the number of business workers decreased by 45,000 compared to the same month last year. It is downhill for 9 consecutive months.

Kwon Ki-seop said, “As the number of confirmed cases is rapidly increasing in December, the employment situation in December is expected to be quite difficult.” “The trend of employment slowdown will continue until at least the first quarter of next year due to the strengthening social distancing and the expiration of public jobs. I will.”
