[지앤이타임즈] Recently, a place was prepared to seek measures related to the unstable supply and demand of global automotive semiconductors, and to discuss mid- to long-term cooperation plans to preoccupy the future vehicle and semiconductor market and stabilize the domestic supply chain.

On the 4th, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy launched the’Future Vehicle-Semiconductor Solidarity and Cooperation Council’ and discussed cooperation plans between domestic automobile-semiconductor companies.

The domestic automobile and semiconductor industries each have the world’s best capabilities, but they still lack capabilities related to automotive semiconductors, which are the key areas of future mobility.

Automakers rely on foreign countries for most of their core vehicle semiconductors, and semiconductor companies do not have production processes for vehicle semiconductors (MCUs, etc.) with unstable supply and demand.

Core automotive semiconductors take several years for facility expansion and actual vehicle testing in process development, require international standard certification, and secure high reliability and safety even under severe temperature and shock conditions.

In order for the automotive-semiconductor industry to promote mid- to long-term cooperation in the field of automotive semiconductors in the future, it is necessary to establish regular cooperation channels to discuss cooperation measures first.

Accordingly, the government plans to establish a’future car-semiconductor solidarity and cooperation consultative body’ together with the automobile-semiconductor industry, and in the short term, closely discuss measures to resolve the supply and demand insecurity situation, while also actively establishing and promoting mid- to long-term plans.

First of all, as a short-term measure, the government is in close discussion with the international community to improve the semiconductor supply and demand situation at the request of the domestic automobile industry.

Since the 17th of last month, it has been supporting rapid customs clearance for automotive semiconductor parts to prevent disruption in automobile production.

Due to the characteristics of the automobile industry that requires high reliability and safety, we provide emergency support for semiconductor performance evaluation by domestic fabless, module and parts companies, and finished vehicle companies for thorough performance verification of vehicle semiconductors.

Due to the nature of the automotive semiconductor industry, long-term close cooperation between demand-supply companies is required, and the’future car-semiconductor alliance/cooperation consultative body’ is operated.

In the mid- to long-term, we will discover and support a cooperation model that links automobile companies and semiconductor companies (foundry, fabless, etc.).

In order to enhance the competitiveness of the domestic vehicle semiconductor supply chain (Value Chain), support for technology development, performance and certification, etc. will be strengthened, and related infrastructure will be established.

To this end, we will actively support the self-sufficiency of semiconductors and parts for vehicles through related R&D, such as the next-generation intelligent semiconductor technology development business and autonomous driving technology development innovation business.

In order to enhance the performance evaluation and commercialization support for vehicle semiconductors so that the results of R&D can reach final mass production, the establishment of a new dedicated business that reflects the specificity of vehicle semiconductors will be promoted from next year.

In order to alleviate the burden of time and cost required for vehicle semiconductor certification, functional safety test and evaluation and establishment of reliability certification facilities and equipment will be promoted.

Kang Kyung-sung, head of the industrial policy department of the Ministry of Industry, said, “The recent global automotive semiconductor supply and demand uncertainty is due to the global semiconductor supply and demand mismatch. said.
