An unmarried woman who killed a newborn baby less than a month after being born in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province was handed over to trial.

According to the police and the prosecution on the 19th, the prosecution recently detained Kim Mo (20) on the charges of child abuse and lethality. On the 2nd of last month, Kim is accused of slapping his son on the head with a hand wearing a ring. Kim’s son was only 29 days old when he died and died in December of last year. The baby was taken to the hospital emergency room after the abuse, but died of a brain hemorrhage. When the hospital reported suspected child abuse to the police, the abuse of his father was revealed.

Mr. Kim initially denied the allegations of abuse, saying, “The mobile fell and the child was injured.” The Suwon Southern Police Department saw that the charges were serious and arrested Kim and arrested him. However, considering that Mr. Kim had no intention of murdering his son, he applied the charges of child abuse and lethality, not murder.

In the course of the police investigation, additional circumstances emerged that Mr. Kim abused his young child several times. When a baby cried, it was thrown on a bed mattress, and even if the baby’s condition worsened, it was revealed that the baby was left unattended without taking him to the hospital.

Kim was an unmarried woman raising her son alone, and she did not report birth. Since Kim’s son did not exist on paper, no one had any way of knowing whether Kim was raising his children well. Under the current law, unmarried women can report the birth of their children through genetic testing if they do not know personal information such as the birth mother’s name or resident registration number.

The birth mother of Kim and her son was not married, nor were they in a common-law relationship. The investigative agency believes that the baby was born while the two maintained a romantic relationship. It is known that the mother, who is a minor, gave birth without the knowledge of her family. However, it was found that Kim was raising the baby alone because his mother refused to raise it.

During this process, Kim said to his mother, “If I do not break up with my boyfriend, I will inform my family about the pregnancy and childbirth.”

Gong Hye-jeong, CEO of the Korea Child Abuse Prevention Association, emphasized, “Severe punishment is necessary for child abuse, but prevention activities are also important.”
