The’AI Innovation Park’, an emphasis project of UNIST (Ulsan Institute of Science and Technology), is officially launched. Starting from the establishment of the Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence last year, the creation of an artificial intelligence hub for a re-leap in the southeastern region including Ulsan is in full swing.

UNIST announced on the 5th that it formed the’Artificial Intelligence Innovation Park Project Group (Director Dong-seop Kim)’ and started operating the secretariat for full-scale business operation. On the 12th of this month, a non-face-to-face business presentation will be held.

‘Artificial Intelligence Innovation Park’, located on the industry-academic convergence campus in the Techno Industrial Complex in Duwang-dong, Nam-gu, aims to create an innovative ecosystem that leads to education, research, and entrepreneurship based on artificial intelligence and big data in the region. In particular, the introduction of data, network and artificial intelligence (DNA)-based manufacturing innovation in Ulsan, the industrial capital, is expected to lead a substantial industrial change.

The Ministry of Science and ICT and Ulsan City are also actively supporting the promotion of the’Artificial Intelligence Innovation Park’ project. This year, about 3.5 billion won will be invested in national and municipal expenses.

The core business of’Artificial Intelligence Innovation Park’ consists of three things: education for incumbent workers in industry, industry-academia cooperation research, and start-up support.

The education of the incumbent is at the center of the UNIST Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence (President Samhyuk Noh). The education, named’Artificial Intelligence (AI) Novatos Academy’, is scheduled to begin in February this year.

Systematic support is also provided for industry-academia cooperation research for artificial intelligence convergence. In particular, it actively supports R&D in the form of’AI+X Lab’ to innovate the major industries in the region and foster new industries. Together with corporate members, it is to create a foundation for convergence research such as’AI+Automobile’,’AI+Ship’,’AI+Healthcare’, and’AI+Semiconductor’, and cooperate to attract and perform industry-university joint projects.

Lastly, it provides a nursery space for artificial intelligence innovative companies to support startups. By leasing the space of the industry-university convergence campus to artificial intelligence-related venture companies, tenants can receive benefits such as education, seminars, and use of computing facilities, as well as opportunities for cooperation with UNIST researchers.

UNIST President Lee Yong-hoon said, “Smart manufacturing innovation based on artificial intelligence and data will change the future of the Southeast region.” We look forward to growing into an intelligent innovation hub.” Reporter Hyungseok Cha [email protected]
