The UN Security Council (Security Council) launches an investigation into North Korea’s recent missile launch. The term of office of the expert panel under the Security Council Sanctions Committee on North Korea will be extended.

At the meeting of the Sanctions Committee on North Korea, which was held privately on the 26th (local time), the US representative to the United Nations said, “The expert panel has decided to investigate the recent missile launches in North Korea and report the results back to the Sanctions Committee.” ). After the meeting, the representative of Norway, the chairman of the North Korea Sanctions Committee, announced that it condemned North Korea’s launch of ballistic missiles as individual states. The Norwegian representative also pointed out through social network service (SNS) Twitter that “the sanctions against North Korea need to be implemented,” and that “North Korea should engage in meaningful dialogue and take concrete actions for denuclearization.”

The sanctions committee meeting held that day was made at the request of the United States. The United States did not propose a discussion at the Security Council level for several short-range ballistic missile launches by North Korea in 2019 during the former administration of Donald Trump. However, after taking office, the Biden administration requested that the North Korean Sanctions Committee discuss it when the first North Korean short-range ballistic missile provocation occurred. An official from the US Representative told VOA that “this is an important first step.”

Meanwhile, the term of the Sanctions Committee’s expert panel was extended by one year. The US Representative added that at a separate meeting that day, it unanimously voted on Resolution 2569, which extends the term of the expert panel to April 30 next year. In addition, according to the resolution, the expert panel will submit the interim report to the Security Council by September 5, and the final report by February 25, 2022. The expert panel consists of eight members, one from each of the five permanent members of the Security Council, and one from Japan, Singapore, and Korea, and members can serve for up to five years.
