The UN Security Council (Security Council) issued a statement stating that it “expresses profound concern” over the military coup in Myanmar. However, since there is no criticism of the military, which is the main culprit of the situation, criticism has been raised as to whether China and Russia have noticed.

According to AFP news agency on the 4th (local time), in a statement released on the day, the Security Council members expressed their deep concern over the detention of government officials such as Myanmar’s military declaration of an emergency and state advisor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Yun Min. “I urge the immediate release of all those detained.”

The Security Council said, “It emphasizes the need for continued support for democratization in Myanmar. It also emphasizes the need to maintain democratic institutions and procedures, refrain from violence, and fully respect human rights and freedoms and the rule of law.”

“We are also concerned about the regulation of civil society and journalists,” and urged residents to ensure humanitarian access, including the resumption of flights carrying UN aids.

The statement, drafted by Britain, the current presidency of the Security Council, did not reach direct condemnation of the Myanmar military’s attempted coup, according to the AFP.

Accordingly, some point out that the Security Council failed to directly criticize the military because of the attention of China and Russia.

Since the coup, China has indirectly criticized the accusations of other countries, saying, “I hope that Myanmar will become stable and peaceful through domestic negotiations rather than external interference.”
