There was a lot of snow in winter, and spring came to’Ulleungdo’, which is called the snow country. Spring specialties appeared one after another.

According to Ulleung-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do on the 21st, farmers from all over Ulleungdo have been busy collecting the sap of’Usan Goroso’, which is called the’herald of spring’, from this month. It is a collecting method in which a straw made of plastic or vinyl is inserted into the Umbrella Goroso tree, and the sap is removed and collected.

The Goro-eki tree is a maple and broad-leaved tree that grows wild in the highlands. It is said that the name Goro-soe is derived from the Chinese word’Golisu’ (骨利樹), which means’benefit to bones’.

Usangoroso sap, which is unique to Ulleungdo, tastes different from other land goroso sap. It is said to have a strong sweet taste. Ulleung-gun explained that it is characterized by its high content of calcium and potassium, so it has a unique scent (saponin).

Ulleung-gun said, “Last year, 437 tons of 64 farmhouses were collected and sold due to the low production of Usangoroso sap, but this year, the daily temperature difference is larger than the previous year, so the production of Usangoroso sap is expected to increase further.” Some environmental groups argue that the harvesting of blast furnace iron, which harms nature, should be prohibited for a long time.

Ulleungdo’s’wild greens’, which only fly in spring, are also counting down for shipment. It will be shipped in earnest starting next month and sent to land such as Seoul. Wild vegetables poker, samnaul and gobi are famous.

Especially, Ulleungsan Garlic, also known as Ulleungdo Myeongnamul, will be available at the table starting next month. Ulleungdo Myeongnamul is high in phosphoric acid, iron and zinc. The leaves and stems are eaten as herbs and are sold as raw vegetables, pickles, and kimchi.

Ulleung-gun plans to provide support to farmers for distribution and logistics costs on land and sea, taking into account the characteristics that Ulleungdo wild vegetables are produced for a short period of time. Kim Byung-soo, head of Ulleung County, said, “I hope that Usan gorso sap, poker, and specialty spring products of excellent quality will be served on the table of land families.”
