The National Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) has requested a recall of 158,000 Tesla Model S and Model X vehicles, Cnet and other foreign media reported on the 13th (local time).

Vehicles subject to recall are Model S produced from 2012 to 2018 and Model X from 2016 to 2018.

In a letter to Tesla, NHTSA requested a recall that the touch screen display malfunctions or stops due to an error in the media control unit (MCU) of these vehicles, which could pose a risk to the driver.

NHTSA pointed out that the malfunction of the touch screen caused by such an MCU error can greatly affect driving because the rear and backup cameras and turn signals may not work properly and the autopilot autonomous driving assistance system may not function properly.

The main cause of this problem is the flash drive memory used in the vehicle, and it turns out that an error occurs when the memory capacity is full. The vehicle’s MCU is reportedly equipped with NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 processor.

The issue was first revealed when Vice News reported in October 2019. As complaints continued to be filed after the report, NHTSA launched an official investigation in June of last year.

Tesla has released several updates to address the issue, but NHTSA said the update was quite insufficient to fix the problem.

Tesla did not immediately respond to NHTSA’s request. If Tesla refuses to recall, Cnet said it must explain its decision to the NHTSA in detail by January 27th.
