CNN and the BBC reported on the 11th (local time) that a U.S. submarine, which was sunk by Japanese forces during the Pacific War, was found in the seabed at a depth of 430m after 75 years.

The’Lost 52 Project’ team, who searched for the remains of a submarine that was sunk or missing during World War II, announced in June that it had found the remains of the US Navy submarine’Grayback’ on the seabed near Okinawa, Japan.

The’Grayback’ left Pearl Harbor for patrol in the East China Sea on January 28, 1944, at the height of the Pacific War, but lost contact after being attacked by Japanese fighters during the operation. At that time, the submarine had 80 crew members on board.

The exploration was spurred by the discovery of a new military document that accurately recorded the location of the Grayback. The exploration team discovered the remains of a submarine on the ocean floor at a depth of 430m after conducting an underwater drone exploration off the coast of Okinawa.

Tim Taylor, who led the exploration team, said, “By confirming the location of the ship’s sinking, we can safely protect the last sanctuary of the naval soldiers.”

The’Grayback’ received two US Navy citations for sinking all 14 enemy ships during World War II, the BBC reported.
