Two employees were confirmed at the Seoul East Detention Center (hereinafter referred to as the Eastern Detention Center), where the outbreak of a novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) continues to occur.
The Ministry of Justice said on the 10th that two additional employees of the Eastern Detention Center were confirmed. One additional employee was added by 8 a.m. on that day, and one employee was tested positive in the afternoon. Accordingly, the number of corona19 confirmed cases in correctional facilities nationwide has increased to 1,225.
Separately, the number of cumulative confirmed cases related to the eastern detention center, as of 0 o’clock on the day of the central defense countermeasure headquarters, totaled 1,192 including employees, prisoners, family members and acquaintances. Employees at Dongbu detention center, which were confirmed additionally during the day, are expected to be reflected in the statistics later.
The number of confirmed detainees by institution was 668 in the eastern detention center, 333 in North Gyeongsang Province 2, 16 in Gwangju, 17 in southern Seoul, 1 in Seoul, and 3 in Gangwon-do.
The Ministry of Justice transferred about 250 of the remaining 320 female prisoners who were negatively judged the day before, excluding those with direct or indirect contacts and underlying diseases, to the newly built Daegu prison.
An official from the Ministry of Justice explained, “We took special measures preemptively to prevent additional female confirmed cases.” On the 11th, the Ministry of Justice is scheduled to conduct an eighth total investigation of prisoners in the eastern detention center.
