Taiwan TSMC, the world’s largest semiconductor consignment production (foundry) company, will enter Japan for the first time in the form of establishing a R&D facility. It is interpreted as an attempt to strengthen ties with the US and Japan against Korean and Chinese semiconductor companies.

The Nippon Geizai Shimbun reported on the 9th that TSMC plans to invest 20 billion yen (about 2123 billion won) to establish a semiconductor development company in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture.

We plan to hold a board of directors soon to decide on a plan to enter Japan and announce it this week as early as possible. A TSMC official said, “We cannot comment, but we will announce it as soon as it is decided.”

TSMC’s Japanese new company is planning to develop technology related to packaging, one of the semiconductor back-end processes. Installation of a semiconductor production line is also being considered, the newspaper reported.

The sector that requires the most technological prowess in semiconductor manufacturing is pre-processing, but lately, post-processing has also been emphasized, and global semiconductor companies are competing fiercely for technology development.

TSMC is already actively cooperating with Japanese companies in Taiwan, its home country. However, the newspaper reported that in order to hurry up the development of state-of-the-art semiconductors, it was determined that it was essential to enter Japan, where world-class semiconductor device and material companies are gathered.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan is also considering a plan to subsidize the connection between TSMC and Japanese companies by designating semiconductors as strategic areas.

TSMC is working on building a high-tech semiconductor plant in the US for the first time abroad. TSMC is interpreted as a strategy to counter the growth of the Chinese semiconductor industry by establishing a high-tech semiconductor development base in Japan following the US and effectively utilizing the strengths of the three countries.
