‘Transportation LPG’, which keeps falling, needs countermeasures

2020 LPG consumption status announcement… 12.2% drop for transportation
Petrochemical LPG 7.1%↑… Lead to steady increase in usage

[에너지신문] As LPG cars fell below 2 million units for the first time in 10 years last year, the consumption of LPG for transportation has also greatly decreased, and it seems urgent to prepare countermeasures.

According to the 2020 LPG consumption status, recently announced by the Korea National Oil Corporation, LPG consumption in 2020 declined by 0.3% compared to the same period last year due to a sharp decline in butane for transportation, despite the continued increase in petrochemical use.

The cumulative LPG sales volume was 10,334,000 tons, down 0.3% from 10362,000 tons in the same period last year. By type, propane was 6.64 million tons, an increase of 373,000 tons from 6.26 million tons in the same period last year, an increase of 6.0%, while butane was 3.694,000 tons, a decrease of 401,000 tons compared to the previous year’s 4095,000 tons, down 9.8%.

Specifically, in the case of propane, household and commercial tons were 1.55 million tons, a decrease of 26,000 tons compared to 1,577,000 tons last year, a decrease of 1.7%, but for petrification use, 4.15 million tons, an increase of 384,000 tons from 3775,000 tons last year. It increased by 10.2%. Industrial use was 930,000 tons, up 1.6% from the previous year (915,000 tons).

In the case of Bhutan, the majority declined significantly. Household and commercial sectors recorded 890,000 tons, down 10.1% from 990,000 tons last year, and transport butane to 2678,000 tons, down 373,000 tons compared to 3,500,000 tons last year, down 12.2%. Petroleum use was 718,000 tons, which was 59 million tons, 7.6% more enjoyable than last year’s 777,000 tons. On the other hand, industrial butane alone reached 209,000 tons, a significant increase of 24.4% from 168,000 tons last year.

Looking at each use, the continued decline in transport LPG is remarkable. Transportation LPG plunged 12.2%. This indicates that the rapid increase in electric and hydrogen cars and the decline in recognition due to the shortage of new LPG cars are continuing.

According to the number of LPG vehicles registered by the Korea LPG Association, in 2020, it reached 1.95,740 vehicles, which was the first among the statistics in the last 10 years to be less than 2 million. This is because the number of LPG registrations, which maintained an increasing trend after the abolition of the restrictions on the purchase of LPG vehicles as a countermeasure against fine dust in March 2019, began to decline significantly, and the consumption of LPG for transportation began to decline sharply.

The government is expected to increase LPG 1-ton truck sales this year by doubling the purchase support business for new LPG trucks compared to last year, but there is no news of the launch of a new model for LPG passenger cars, so there is no changeable factor.

LPG, which is used as a raw material for petrochemicals, continued to increase, showing a 7.1% growth rate. Demand for petrochemicals is expected to continue to increase in the future as petrochemical companies are expanding their basic oil production facilities using LPG as a raw material, which is superior in price competitiveness to naphtha, which is a competitive raw material.
