The first runners of the torch relay were members of the Japanese national team who won the 2011 Women’s Soccer World Cup during the Great East Japan Earthquake.
The torch relay is held for 121 days until July 23, when the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics is held. About 10,000 runners run 47 metropolitan governments across Japan.
