“It is bitter how Gumi, who led the economy of the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions during the industrialization period, got such an image.”
The negative image of Gumi City in Gyeongbuk, where violent incidents have been followed in recent years, is spreading. Citizens are concerned that Gumi may be stigmatized as a’criminal city’.
Citizens cite the recent so-called “Gumi 3-year-old girl death” as well as the case where a newborn baby was found abandoned on the side of the road, or a woman with depression throws her young daughter out the window as a representative example of a negative image on Gumi.
The death of a 3-year-old girl in Gumi has recently attracted national attention. This is the case where a 3-year-old girl was found dead in a villa in Sangmosagok-dong, Gumi-si, Gyeongbuk, on the 10th of last month. A (22), a woman who left the dead girl alone in a villa and moved, was initially known as her biological mother, but as a result of a police investigation, A’s mother, B (48), was found to be her biological mother, causing excommunication.

Although known as the maternal grandmother of a 3-year-old girl who died in Gumi, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Mr. A, who was found to be his mother as a result of DNA testing, is being escorted from the Gumi Police Station to the Daegu District Prosecutor’s Office on the 17th. Mr. A said to the reporter’s question, “DNA test is not acceptable. It is unfair.” News 1
Currently, the mother B, who was arrested on the charges of weakening a minor and attempting to abandon the corpse, denies the DNA test result itself. As Mr. B was sent to the Daegu District Prosecutor’s Office on the 17th, he appealed to the reporters, saying, “When I tell you that I am not (my mother), please believe in my heart.”
On the 24th of last month, not long after a 3-year-old girl was found dead, a woman in her 30s in Jinpyeong-dong, Gumi, dropped her 6-year-old daughter from the 4th floor of a studio and committed herself. This woman is reportedly suffering from depression. This incident also shocked as the video containing the crime scene spread around the social network service (SNS).
Earlier, in June 2019, a newborn body was found in a residential area in Jinpyeong-dong, Gumi-si. This is the case when an environmental sanitation center cleaning this area found a newborn baby whose umbilical cord was not cut in a styrofoam box.

On the morning of the 17th, Gumi Police Chief Kim Han-tak is giving a briefing on the’Gumi Girl Murder Case’ at the Gumi Police Station in Gyeongsangbuk-do. yunhap news
The case still remains undetected. At one time, there were suspicions that there was a connection with the death of a 3-year-old girl from Gumi, but it was determined that there was no relationship due to the fact that the timing was not correct and the umbilical cord remained intact.
In addition, in May 2018, a 28-year-old father and a 16-month-old son died side by side in a studio in Bonggok-dong, Gumi-si, and the incident remains in people’s memories. Recently, foreigners who fought a late-night chase with the police were caught carrying methamphetamine, which can be administered by 1,300 people simultaneously.
In recent years, as violent crimes that have made the country noisy have continued, voices of concern about the decline in the image of the region are increasing. Jung Min-soo (45), an office worker, said, “In the past, Gumi City was full of vitality because of the local economy, but now many large corporations are leaving and the outflow of population is severe.”

The embarrassing thing is the same with Gumi City. Gumi City, designated as a’child-friendly city’ in 2019, was selected as an excellent child-friendly city last year and received the Ministerial Award. It also won the grand prize at the 2019 Korea Crime Prevention Awards. This is why there are concerns that efforts to have a safe city image may be thrown away by violent crimes related to child abuse.
In fact, the rate of violent crime in Gumi is not higher than that of other regions. According to the statistics of crime locations in the National Statistical Portal, the number of crimes in the Gumi region is 15,034 in 2017, 12,598 in 2018, and 13,156 in 2019, which are similar to those of other local governments. Among them, the number of violent crimes (murder, robbery, rape, arson, etc.) occurred 193 in 2017, 159 in 2018, and 176 in 2019.
In terms of the number of violent crimes that occurred in 2019, 176 violent crimes in Gumi were Seoul (6977), Busan (1716), Daegu (1095), Gwangju (753), as well as Gyeongju (111). , Pohang (191 cases), etc.
Gumi Gyeongsil-ryun pointed out, “We need specialized projects that are effective centering on one-room dense areas where extreme events are continuing.”
