As of November of last year, LG Energy Solution ranked 2nd, Samsung SDI 4th, and SK Innovation 5th

[에너지데일리 변국영 기자] Three domestic electric vehicle battery companies are in the top 5 in the global market.
According to SNE Research, as of November last year, LG Energy Solutions ranked second, while Samsung SDI and SK Innovation ranked fourth and fifth respectively.
All three Korean companies showed double-digit growth and increased their market share significantly, greatly strengthening their market position. LG Energy Solutions rose to 2nd place from 3rd place in the same period of the previous year, recording 26.4GWh, which increased more than 2.4 times. Samsung SDI rose 72.4% to 6.8GWh, ranking up to fourth. SK Innovation jumped four steps in the rankings, showing 6.5GWh, an increase of nearly 3.4 times.
The growth of the three companies can be attributed to the increase in sales of models equipped with each company’s battery. LG Energy Solutions showed steady growth mainly due to strong sales of Tesla Model 3 (made in China), Renault Joe, and Volkswagen ID.3. Samsung SDI’s sales growth of Audi E-tron EV, Ford Kuga PHEV, and Volkswagen Passat GTE led to growth. SK Innovation’s usage surged thanks to the surge in sales of Hyundai Kona EV (European supply) and Kia Niro EV.
Meanwhile, as of November last year, the total amount of battery energy for electric vehicles registered in countries around the world was 116.5GWh, up 15.3% from the same period last year. Electric vehicle demand declined in the aftermath of the novel corona in the first and second quarters of last year, then rebounded from the third quarter and turned to an increase. CATL, which ranked first, finally turned to an increase in the Chinese market as the market recovered rapidly. The eighth place CALB also continued its triple-digit growth. However, most of the rest of the Chinese companies have not escaped the decline. Most Japanese companies, including third place Panasonic, also remained in reverse growth.
An official from SNE Research said, “According to the current trend, CATL, LG Energy Solution, and Panasonic are expected to take the 1st to 3rd place side by side in the annual electric vehicle battery usage ranking in 2020.” It is expected that SK Innovation and BYD will compete for this.”
